the200sB.C.,theChineseerectedmajorsectionsofthemonumentalGreatWallof
China.
Earlyengineersusedsuchsimplemachinesastheinclinedplane,wedge,and
wheelandaxle.DuringtheMiddleAges,aperiodinEuropeanhistorythatlasted
fromtheA.D.400stothe1500s,inventorsdevelopedmachinestoharnesswater,
wind,andanimalpower.Thegrowinginterestinnewtypesofmachinesandnew

throughouttheircareerstomakesurethattheirknowledgeandexpertisedonot
becomeobsolete.Theyfacethechallengingtaskofkeepingpacewiththelatest
advanceswhileworkingtoshapethetechnologyofthefuture.
Thefieldofengineeringoffersabroadrangeofjobopportunities.Engineersmay
workinfactories,offices,andgovernmentlaboratoriesoratconstructionsites.Some
engineersareinvolvedintheresearchanddevelopmentofnewproducts.Othersare
responsibleforturningplansandspecificationsfornewstructures,machines,or
systemsintoreality.Stillothersusetheirbackgroundandtrainingtosellandservice

decadeswouldsavehalftheoiltheU.S.uses,beforemovingtoahydrogen-based
economythatdispenseswithoilaltogether(saveforpossibleuseasafueltoproduce

transportation,anyenergypolicyisnecessarilyalsoanautomobilepolicy.The
singlekeyinsightofLovins'reportistofocusontheneedtoreducetheweightofcars
(withoutsacrificingsafety)byusingadvancedmaterialslikecarbonfiberand
compositesinsteadofheavysteel.Whenpoweredbyhybridtechnologiesthat
combineelectricitywiththeinternal-combustionengine,suchlightvehicleswill
produceenormousoilsavings.Lovinsproposesaniftyschemewhichwouldreduce
