emorecomplicatedbecauseeachstickmovesupanddownandleftandright...Therighthandstickwould,forexample(*seebelow),controlelevator(up/down)andaileron(left/right)whilstthelefthandstickwouldcontrolthrottle(up/down)andrudder(left/right).Learningtocontroltwoactionswithonestickmaysoundcomplicatedbutisquicklymasteredandwithpracticequickly ethestandardforflyinginNorthAmerica,whilemanyBritishflyerspreferMode1transmitters.Modes3and4arerarelyused,butsomeflyersdoprefertheseset-upstoModes1or2.Thereareadvantagestoeitherone,andnomodeiswrongorright;havingtheaileronsandelevatoronthesamestick(Mode2)putsbothprimarycontrolsinoneplaceandcorrespondtoarealairplane'sjoystick.Buthavingthetwoprimarycontrolsonseparatesticks(Mode1)meansthere'slesschanceofyouinadvertentlychangingoneinputwhilemovingtheother.Whichevermodeyouendupflyingwith,thechancesarethatyou'llstickwiththatoneforallyourflyingdays.Onceyou'velearnedonemode,it'sverydifficulttostartflyingonanother!Browsercsystems,ifyou'relookingtoAdditionalradiocontrolAdditionalfunctions,allreferredtoaschannels,arefoundoneithertoggleswitchesordials,bothofwhichcanbelocatedonthefaceortopofthetransmitterwithineasyfingertipreach(thephotoshowsthetopleftcornerofatransmitterwithmanyextrachannels).CommonradiocontrolfunctionsandfeaturesControlsurfacemixing.Channelmixing.Programmablesettingsandmemory.Trainingfeatures.Flapsareusuallycontrolledbyrotatingasmalldialsothatvaryingamountsofflapcanbeappliedasnecessary.Retractablelandinggear,or'retracts',ontheotherhand,islikelytobecontrolledbytheflickofatoggleswitch.Controlsurfacemixingisonlypossibleonacomputer-basedtransmitter,whichareverycommonthesedays.Asinglepairofcontrolsurfacesismadetoatwoseparatepairswould.Themostcommontypeofcontrolsurfacemixingistocombineelevatorandailerondeflectioninto'elevons'.Withsuixing,thetransmitterisoperatednormallybutthesinglepairofcontrolsurfacescombinethetwodifferentdeflectionsinaccordancewiththeTxstickmovementsandsomovetogether,aselevatorsdo,andindividuallyasaileronsdo.Othersimilarcontrolsurfacemixingincludesfrons(mixingaileron&flapdeflection)andspoilerons(mixingaileron&spoilerdeflection).Channelmixingoccurswhentwoseparatechannelsaremadetooperateinconjunctionwithoneanother.Forexample,youcouldprogramanaileronandruddermixwherebytherudderautomaticallymovesasetamountwhentheaileronsareAmemoryfunctionofanrcsystemmeansthatmultiplemodelscanbeusedwithjusttheonetransmitter.OncetheparticularsettingsforamodelareprogrammedintotheTx(egtrimsettings),theycanbestoredalongwithsavedsettingsforothermodels.Thisfunctionisveryconvenient,itpreventsyouhavingtostarttrimmingfromscratcheverytimeyouflyadifferentaircraftwiththesametransmitter.Atrainingfeatureistheabilitytoconnectonetransmittertoasecondtransmitter,oryetallowstheinstructortoresumeimmediatecontrolattheflickofaswitch,ifthestudentgetsintodifficulties.Thiswayoflearningisoneofthebestmethodsandshouldbeseriouslyconsideredifyoujoinaclub-mostmodelairplaneclubswillhaveatleastonebuddyboxsystem,toenableflighttrainingunderdirectsupervisionofanapprovedmodelflyinginstructor.(Radiocontrolsimulatorsarealsoaverypopularwayoflearningtoflyrc.Seethispageformoreinformationonthese).Furtherradiocontrolfunctionscommonlyfoundonatransmittercanbeservoreverseanddualrates...Servoreverseallowsthedirectionofservomovementtobefullyreversed,idealfortimeswhenaservocanonlybeinstalledinthemodelinawaywhichisn'tconducivetotherequireddirectionofmovement.Dualratesenablethecontrolsurfacedeflectiontobelimitedwhilestillretainingfullstickmovement,soastolimitthesensitivityoftheairplaneintheair.Withdualratesoffthecontrolsurfacehas100%deflection,butwithdualratesonthedeflectioncanbeprogrammeddownto,say,a20%deflectionlimit.DualratescanbefoundonsomeRTFrcairplanesthesedays,andmaybedescribedas'BeginnerMode'(lessdeflection)and'AdvancedMode'(fulldeflection).Browseradiocontrolsystems,ifyou'relookingtoThetrimmingAllrctransmitters,withtheexceptionofthechesttoyones,haveafunctionthatallowsyouto'trim'yourmodelwhileitisbeingflownordriven.Smalltrimlevers,alsocalledtrimtabsorsimplytrims,arelocatedadjacenttoeachstick,oneforeachdirectioninwhichthestickmoves.Thetrimlevershaveexactlythesameeffe themainsticks,onlytoamuchfinerdegree.Essentiallythetrimsfinetunetheservodeflectionormotorpowerofthemodel.Withrcaircraft,theaimoftrimmingistogetyourmodelflyingasstraightandlevelaspossiblewiththemaintransmittersticksintheircentralpositions,andwithnoinputfromyou.It'squitenormaltohavetoadjustthetrimsthroughouteachflyingsession,asoutsidefactorsaffecttheaircraft'sflightcharacteristics.Butoncethetrimshavebeenset,theyareleftaloneuntilthenaturalflightpathoftheaircraftchangesandtheyhavetobeadjustedagain.Whentalkingaboutchannels,thereare2differentmeaningsinthercworld;thenumberofchannelsanrcsystemhasandthefrequencychannelthatthesystemoperateson.Becauseallradiocontrolsystemssendoutradiosignals,justasanormalradioorTVbroadcastingstationdoes,variousfrequencychannelsareneededsothatmorethanonercsetcanbeoperatedatthesametime.So,certainchannelshavebeendesignatedforradiocontrolmodelsbylawandmustbeadheredtoforsafetyreasons.Furthermore,rcmodelaircrafthavetheirownsetofchannelswhilercsurfacevehicleshavetheirs.Formoredetailedinformationonthisveryimportantaspectofradiocontrol,seethercairplanefrequenciespage.Afurtherpointtorememberwhenreferringtoradiofrequenciesusedformodelsisthemodulation.Thewordmodulationreferstothewholeprocessoftheradiosignalbeingsentoutbythetransmitter,receivedbythereceiverandpassedontotheservos.The2standardtypesofmod
