LietoMeisanAmericancrimedramatelevisionseries.ItoriginallyranontheFoxnetworkfromJanuary21,2009toJanuary31,2011.Intheshow,Dr.CalLightmanandhiscolleaguesinTheLightmanGroupacceptassignmentsfromthirdpartiesandassistininvestigations,reachingthetruththroughappliedpsychology:interpretingmicroexpressionsandbodylanguage.TheshowisinspiredbytheworkofPaulEkman,theworld’sforemostexpertonfacialexpressionsandaprofessoremeritusofpsychologyattheUniversityofCaliforniaSanFranciscoSchoolofMedicine.Dr.Ekmanhasservedasanadvisortopolicedepartmentsandanti-terrorismgroupsandactedasascientificconsultantintheproductionoftheseries.Heisalsotheauthorof15books,includingTellingLiesandEmotionsRevealed.SeasononeopenswithCalandGillianhiringanewassociate:TSAofficerRiaTorres,whoscoredextraordinarilyhighonCalsdeception-IntroductiontotheMovieLietoMeIntroductiontotheMovieLietoMedetectiondiagnostic,andisinturnlabeleda’“natural”atdeceptiondetection.HerinnatetalentinthefieldclasheswithCal’sacademicapproach,andheoftenshowsoffbyrapidlyanalyzinghereveryfacialexpression.ShecountersbyreadingLightmanand,whenheleastexpectsit,peppersconversationswithquotesfromhisbooks.ItwasgraduallyrevealedthatDr.Lightmanwasdriventostudymicro-expressionsasaresultofguiltoverhismother’ssuicide.Sheclaimedtohavebeenfineinordertoobtainaweekendpassfromapsychiatricward,whenshewasactuallyexperiencingagony.Forasmallnumberoftheearlyepisodes,LightmanwouldteamupwithTorrestoworkonacase,whileFosterandLokerwouldteamuponaseparatecase.Occasionally,theirworkwouldintertwine,orFosterand/orLightmanwouldprovideassistanceoneachother’scases.Asthefirstseasonprogressed,thecasesbecamemoreinvolved,andallfourofthemaincharacterswouldworktogetherononecaseforeachepisode.Inadditiontodetectingdeceptioninsubjectstheyinterview,Lightmanandhisteamalsousevariousinterviewingandinterrogationtacticstoelicitusefulinformation.Ratherthanbyforce,theyusecarefullinesofquestioning,provocativestatements,theatricsandhealthydosesofdeceptionontheirownpart.Intheshow’spilotepisode,Lightmanisspeakingtoamanwhoisrefusingtospeakatall,andisabletodiscernvitalinformationbytalkingtohimandgauginghisreactiontoeachstatement.IntroductiontotheMovie
