ageof95,leavingbehindafascinatinglegacy.
BornonAugust26,1927,inPune,southeastofMumbai,Doshigrewupwithhisfatherand
grandfather,afurnituremaker.Asachildhecametoappreciatehowtheirhousegrewand
changed.In1947,shortlybeforeIndianindependence,hebeganarchitectureschool.However,he
neverfinished,afactwhichhe'dlaterpointtoinlifeasanadvantage.HemarriedhiswifeKamala
Parikhin1955.Whenshepassedaway,Doshilivedinahousehedesignedandnamedforhis
belovedwife.
DoshiwasinfluencedbythefamousSwiss-FrencharchitectknownasLeCorbusier.Doshi
studiedwithhiminParisandthenreturnedtoIndiatosupervisethearchitect'sworkin
Ahmedabad.In1956,DoshifoundedhisownfirmcalledVastushilpa.IIctraveledtheworld
lecturingatuniversities,workedwithotherfamousarchitects,andevenfoundedtheCenterfor
EnvironmentalPlanningandTechnology(nowCEPTUniversity)focusingonunderstanding,
designing,planning,constructingandmanaginghumanhabitats.
