Preface

TestSpecificationPV3370isarevisionofPV3345foruseforresidualforeignmatterspecificationandalsofordrawingnotesformanualtransmissioncomponentswithspecialrequirementsandforthestandardizationofdifferentiatedrequirements.

1Scope

Thisstandardisintendedforinternaluse.Externally,itmaybemadeaccessibleonlytoreleasedsuppliersand/orthoseintendedtobereleased.

Thisstandardisdesignedtodeterminetheresidualforeignmatterstatusintransmissioncomponents,withthepurposeofenhancingorensuringtheinteriorcleanlinessoftransmissions,inparticularautomatictransmissions;itisapplicabletosupplypartsandin-housemanufacturedparts.

2Requirements

Accordingtodrawing.

ThePerformanceSpecifications"Transmission,ResidualForeignMatterModule"shallapply,eitheradditionallyorasanalternative.Itrelates,interalia,tostatementsontheabsenceofweldspatterandabrasivesthataretobeobserved.

3Test

3.1Briefdescription

Theexaminationisperformedoncompletedsingleparts/assembliesthathaveundergonefinalcleaningandhavebeenreleasedformountingorinstallation.

Therequirednumberofspecimenpartsaretakenoutofthepackagingandcleanedunderlaboratoryconditions;theresiduesarefilteredandareevaluatedwithregardtoparticlesize,massandtype.

3.2Detailedandsystemdescription

Theresidualforeignmatterrequirementforeachsinglepartoreachassemblyisdescribedbyanidentifier(upper-caseletter/number/lower-caselettercombination).Thisnumericalvaluealsogivestheminimumquantitytobetested.

Theupper-caseletterdefinesthemaximumpermissibleparticlesizeandparticlenumber,thefollowingcodenumberdefinesthemassoftheresidualforeignmatterandthenecessaryspecimenquantity(takingintoconsiderationtheavailableweighingequipment).

Thelower-caseletterprovidesinstructionsondetailcriteriasuchasposition,degreeofdismantlingandspecialfeatures(Tables1to3).

3.3Specimenquantity

Thenecessaryminimumquantitydependsonthepermissiblemassoftheresidualforeignmatterandtheweighingequipmentusedforevaluation.

Itisorientedtowardtherelevantcomponentorassembly,thesensitivityoftheareaofapplicationandtheapparatusavailablefordeterminingthemassoftheresidualforeignmatter.

3.5Testprocedure

3.5.1Specimenparts

Supplypartsandin-housemanufacturedpartsinthetypeintendedforfinalassembly.Thepartsshallberemovedfromtheunopenedoriginalpackaging.TheminimumspecimenquantityiscalculatedaccordingtoSection3.3.

3.5.2Cleaning

Thepartsarecleanedinanorganichydrocarbon-basedsolvent.

SafetycoldcleaningagentsofflashpointhazardclassA3,freeofchlorinatedhydrocarbonsandaromatichydrocarbons,havebeentriedandtestedforthispurpose.

CleaningaccordingtoVDA19,using:

-Low-pressuresprayingwithwashbottle

-Medium-pressuresprayingbymeansofspraygunincleaningcabinet

-Ultrasoniccleaning,rinsinginsolvent

-Flushingfrombothsidesbymeansofdiaphragmpump(interiorflushing)

Thetaskofthetestfluidistostriptheforeignmatterburdenonthecomponentsascompletelyaspossible.Therelevantprocessisaccordinglyselectedforthecomponentandisdeemedtobeappropriatewhenasecondtestofthesamepartshowsaresidualforeignmatterquantity<10%ofthefirsttest(fadingcurveinaccordancewithSection4.1ofVDA19).Thecleanlinessofthetestfluidhasadirectinfluenceontheblankvalueandincreasesthevalueifitiscontaminated.

Thecleanlinessofthefluidusedistobeensuredbymeansofappropriatefiltration.

Theblankvalueoftherelevanttestprocedureistobedeterminedwithoutthespecimenparts.

Ifablankvalueexceeds10%oftheresidualforeignmatterquantitypermittedortobeexpected,thetestingdevicesandtestingtoolsmustbecleanedagain.

Componentswithasurfaceeasilyaccessibleonallsides

Cleanspecimenpartsusingasufficientquantityofthecleaningagent,eitheroneaftertheotheroralltogether,dependingonthesizeoftheparts.

Whenspraying,thetotalfluidquantityistobedistributedevenlyoverthecomponents.

Duringultrasoniccleaning,thetimeistobelimitedto60seconds.Thepartsaretobeflushedusingawashbottlecontainingcleancleaningagentwhentheyareremoved.

Testvesselsmadeofglassorstainlesssteelaretobeused,nodampingmaterialssuchasplastic.Duringrinsing,approx.50strokesaretobeexecutedwithin60seconds.

Aconicalvesselfittingthespecimenisused,sothatthespecimenisapprox.6mmabovethebottominordertoensurethatthespecimencancomeintocontactwiththefluidonallsides.

Componentswithpartialresidualforeignmatterrequirements

Componentsforwhichonlypartialareasofthesurfaceoronlytheinterioraresubjecttoaresidualforeignmatterrequirementorforwhichdifferentinteriorsaresubjecttodifferentregulations(e.g.inthecaseofahousingwithdifferentrequirementsforthehypoidspaceandATFspaceandnorequirementfortheexterior)aresprayedwithsufficientquantitiesoffluidinthenon-regulatedareafirstinordertopreventfalsificationofthefollowingprocedure.Asarule,thefluidisdiscardedorsuppliedforgravimetricanalysis.Afterthat,thechamberorsurfacetobetestedissprayedorflushed.Thesurfacesnottobetestedarecovered.Ifthisisnotpossible,onlytherelevantzoneorchamberisflushed.

Hollowbodiessuchashoses,tubes,lines,radiators,etc.

Hollowbodies,forwhichgenerallyonlytheinteriorissubjecttoaresidualforeignmatterrequirement,mustbealternatelyflushedwithcleaningfluid.

Thisisdonebypumping2litersofcleaningfluidperminutethroughthecomponentfrombothsidesfor3minutesusingacommercialpistondiaphragmpump.

Thedirtycleaningagentthatrunsoutisthendirectedthroughthetestfilter.

3.5.3Specialcase:tapping

E.g.fordryclutchdisks

Inthecaseofdryclutchdisks(in-housemounting),thedirtquantityisdeterminedbytappingthemonahardrubberplate20times(testplateapprox.10x20cm,ShoreAhardness80)insteadofbythestandardtestprocedure.

Detaileddescription:10disksareplacedonbothindexfingers,allowedtofallfrombetweenthehandsontothehardrubberplatefromaheightofapprox.5cmandimmediatelypickedupagain.Thisprocedureisrepeated19times.

Theprocedureisperformedonasuitablesurface(e.g.householdtraywithraisededge),andthediskparticlesorthedustisweighed.

Inthecaseofoiledclutchdisksfromclutchassembliesandpreviouslyoperatedtransmissions,thedirtquantityisdeterminedbyrinsingthedisksinsafetycleaningagent.Ultrasoundmustnotbeusedduetothedangerofdiskdisintegration.

3.6Workinstructions

Thetestsarecarriedoutspecificallyforeachcomponent.WorkinstructionsarethentobecompiledtakingintoaccountthedetailsfromVDA19.ExamplescanbefoundintheVDAAppendix.

3.7Filtrationandfilters

Filterthecleaningagentcontainingresidualforeignmatter.Avacuumfilteringunitwithaconstant-weight,pre-weighedfilterisusedforthispurpose(accuracy0,1mg).Thenre-rinsethefilterandresidualforeignmatterwithpetroleumetheranddrytoaconstantweight(observesafetyregulations).

Filtertype:Nylonfibrousfilter,15μmmeshwidth:

Diameter:47mm(largerdiametersarepermissible)

3.8Evaluation

Themassoftheresidualforeignmatterisdeterminedbyre-weighingtheconstant-weightdriedfilter,theresultinmg/partisdividedbythenumberofspecimens.

TheblankvalueistobetakenintoaccountinaccordancewithSection3.5.2.
