Buteducationearlyinadulthooddoesnotappeartobetheonlyroutetomaintainyourmemory.Thestudyfoundthatintellectualactivitiesundertakenregularlymadeadifference.“Amongindividualswithloweducation,thosewhoareengagedinreading,writing,attendinglectures,doingwordgamesorpuzzlesonceaweekormorehadmemoryscoressimilartopeoplewithmoreeducation,”saidLachman.

Thestudy,calledMidlifeintheUnitedStates,assessed3,343menandwomenbetweentheagesof32and84withanaverageageof56years.Almost40percentoftheparticipantshadatleasta4-yearcollegedegree.Theresearchersevaluatedhowtheparticipantsperformedintwocognitiveareas,verbal(言語的)memoryandexecutivefunction---brainprocessesinvolvedinplanning,abstractthinkingandcognitiveflexibility.Participantsweregivenaseriesoftests,includingtestsofverbalfluency,wordrecall,andbackwardcounting.

Asexpected,thosewithhighereducationsaidtheyengagedincognitiveactivitiesmoreoftenandalsodidbetteronthememorytests,butsomewithlowereducationalsodidwell,explainedLachman.
