TheSustainableRicePlatform(SRP)PerformanceIndicatorsVersion1.0wasoriginallypublishedinOctober2015.Version2.0istheresultofacomprehensivereviewandrevision,whichbeganinAugust2017andwascompletedinJanuary2019.TherevisionwasconductedusingtheISEALCodeofGoodPracticeforSettingSocialandEnvironmentalStandards(P005,Version5.01,June2010).

Version2.0introducessignificantchangesincludingthereplacementofsomeindicatorsandtheoptiontomeasuremostindicatorsatanyofthreelevels:Basic,Intermediate,andAdvanced.Thesethreelevelsallowuserstoselecttheoptimalmeasurementlevelaccordingtoresourceavailability,easeofcollectionofdataordesiredlevelofaccuracy.Usersarenotrequiredtocollectdataforallthreelevels.Version2.0allowscollectionofbasicdata(Level1)asanentrypointwhileleavingcollectionofhigher-leveldatatoexternalpartners.

B.1Introduction

TheSustainableRicePlatform(SRP)offersarangeoftoolstopromotesustainablericecultivation,includingthePerformanceIndicators(PIs),theSRPStandardforSustainableRiceCultivation,anAssuranceScheme,officialSRPtrainingmodulesanddecision-makingtools.Thesetoolsareintendedtobeusedeitherseparatelyortogetherasneeded.

RevisionofthePIswasundertakenasamulti-stakeholderprocessinparalleltorevisionoftheSRPStandardonSustainableRiceCultivation.TheStandardprovidesanormativeframeworkanddefinesasetofkeysustainabilityrequirementswithdifferentlevelsofcompliance,allowingforastepwiseimprovementandverificationprocess.

ThisdocumentcontainstherevisedPerformanceIndicatorsVersion2.1,includingadescriptionofeachPIandthemethodologiesrequiredforsamplinganddatacollectionateachofthethreepossiblemeasurementlevels.ThePIsareintendedtobeusedinconjunctionwiththeSRPStandardandtheSRPAssuranceScheme.TherevisedStandard,PIs,AssuranceScheme,trainingtoolsandtemplatesareallavailablefordownloadattheMembers'AreaoftheSRPwebsite:

measureandrecordaccuratelyandregularly.Partnershouldalsovisitfarmersregularlytodiscussandcorroboratetheiractivitiesoverthepreviousrecordingperiod.

Numberofindicatorstomeasure

SRPrecommendsmeasurementofthefullsetofPIsatanyoneofthethreelevels,inordertoidentifypotentialtrade-offsamongcompetingsustainabilityobjectives.Suchananalysiscannotbeachievedbymeasuringapartialset.However,sincetherelativeimportanceofindicatorsdependsonproductioncontext,interventionstrategyoravailableresources,implementingpartnersmayelecttofocusonasubsetofPIsasrelevanttospecificobjectivesandpriorities.

Frequencyofdatacollection

Itisimportanttoestablishabaselinedatasetasapre-interventionbenchmarkattheoutsetoftheprojectinordertobeabletomonitorfutureimprovementasaresultofprojectinterventions.Theabilitytosetbaselineswilldepend,tosomeextent,onavailabilityofhistoricalfarmrecords(forexamplecooperativeaccounts,governmentdata,ordatafrominternationalresearchcenters).

Collectionoffarmrecords,householdsurveysandlaboratorytestsshouldtakeplaceattheendofeachcropcycle.Whereapplicableandpossible,itisrecommendedtoalsocollectdataduringthecropcycleasthiscanservetovalidatethequalityofrecordkeeping.ItisrecommendedtomeasurePIsforatleast2consecutivecropcycles(seeFigure2below).

Samplingapproach

Forlargenumbersofparticipatingproducersasamplingapproachperprojectisrecommended.Theimplementingpartnerselectsacertainnumberoftargetfarmersbasedontheirrepresentativeness,capacityandwillingnesstoparticipate.Ifbothwomenandmenarepartofthetargetpopulation,stratificationbygenderisrequiredinordertogenerategender-disaggregateddata.

Populationsizewilldeterminethenumberoffarmerstobesampled.Thefollowingguidelinesshouldbeusedtocalculatesamplesize:

?Aminimumof5farmersifthepopulationsizeisequalto50farmersorfewer.

?Fortargetgroupsof50-3,500farmers,thesamplesizeshouldequateto10%ofthetotalpopulationoftargetfarmers.

?Ifthetargetgroupisabove3,500farmers,theimplementingpartnerwillselect350farmers.

Implementingpartnersareencouragedtocollectadditionaldatafromacontrolgroupofnon-participatingfarmers.Thiswillprovideabaselinetodefineplausiblecontributionsof

projectinterventionstoobserveimprovementsamongtargetfarmersandhelpascertainattributability.

Controlfarmersmayliveinthesamevillageasfarmersintheproject,inneighboringvillagesorinotherlocations,providedtheyarematchedwithprojectfarmersintermsofsimilaritiesintheirfarmingsystemsandsocio-economiccharacteristicssuchasfarmsize,varietiesgrown,irrigationsystem,numberandtypeofworkers.Itishoweverimportanttoavoidselectingcontrolfarmerswhomaybeinfluencedbyprojectinterventions(e.g.bypeer-to-peerinfluences)orwhomaybenefitfromotherongoinginterventions.

Thefollowingguidelines(Table4)areproposedtocalculatesamplesizeforcontrolgroups:

?Ifthesamplesizeis5farmers,aminimumof5farmerswillalsobeselectedforthecontrolgroup.
