Today,toomanyparentshaven'thadthechancetostepinandrescuetheirlovedones.Tyler's

tragic,senselessdeathwasaturningpointforme.Itservedtorecontextualizemyexperiences,

andIthenbegantolookattheworldofhumiliationandbullyingaroundmeandseesomething

different.In1998,wehadnowayofknowingwherethisbravenewtechnologycalledthe

Internetwouldtakeus.Sincethen,ithasconnectedpeopleinunimaginableways,joininglost

siblings,savinglives,launchingrevolutions,butthedarknessandcyberbullyingthatIexperienced

hadmushroomed.Everydayonline,people,especiallyyoungpeoplewhoarenot

developmentallyequippedtohandlethis,aresoabusedandhumiliatedthattheycan'timagine

livingtothenextday,andsome,tragically,don't,andthere'snothingvirtualaboutthat.A

meta-analysisdoneoutoftheNetherlandsshowedthatforthefirsttime,cyberbullyingwas

leadingtosuicidalideationsmoresignificantlythanofflinebullying.Andyouknowwhatshocked

me,althoughitshouldn'thave,wasotherresearchlastyearthatdeterminedhumiliationwasa

moreintenselyfeltemotionthaneitherhappinessorevenanger.(5)

Crueltytoothersisnothingnew,butonline,technologicallyenhancedshamingisamplified,

uncontained,andpermanentlyaccessible.Theechoofembarrassmentusedtoextendonlyasfar

asyourfamily,village,schoolorcommunity,butnowit'stheonlinecommunitytoo.Millionsof

people,oftenanonymously,canstabyouwiththeirwords,andthct'salotofpain,andthereare

noperimetersaroundhowmanypeoplecanpubliclyobserveyouandputyouinapublic

stockade.Thereisaverypersonalpricetopublichumiliation,and:hegrowthoftheInternethas
