post-quantumcryptography(PQC)algorithmscanbuildresistancetoquantumcomputerattacks,helpingtoprotectsensitivefinancialdatafromemergingthreats.5Meanwhile,quantumsensingprovidesprecisemeasurementcapabilitiesthatmaybeusedtoheightenthesynchronizationofhigh-frequencytrading(HFT)algorithms.6

Toderivemeaningfulvaluefromquantumtechnologies,financialinstitutionswillneedtogobeyondexperimentationandpilotphases.Strategicfocusisrequiredacrossseveralkeypillars–sustainedresearchanddevelopment(R&D)investment,infrastructureenablement,public-privatecollaboration,engagementwith

Byimplementingquantumtechnologies,financialinstitutionsmaybeabletoofferinnovative,high-valueservicessuchasoptimizedportfolios,personalizedproductsandultra-securetransactions,attractingmorecustomersandincreasingrevenue.Operationalefficiencycanalsobeachieved,forexample,throughtheuseofquantumalgorithmsthatsupportfasterandmore

accuratefrauddetectionandimprovementsinresource-intensiveprocesses.Additionally,quantumtechnologiesholdthepotentialtoenhanceriskmanagementbyprovidingmoreaccuratemodelsandsimulations.Furthermore,theycanreduceriskthroughimprovedcryptographymethods.

anddrivinggreatersecuritythroughquantum-resistantcryptographyinitiatives.Suchinitiativesinclude,amongothers,Mastercard’sexplorationofpost-quantumencryption(whichboostsoperationalefficiencyviaquantum-enhancedoptimizationofsettlementprocessesandfrauddetection),JPMorganChase’scollaborationwithQCWareforcreditrisksimulations(which

strengthenslong-termresiliencethroughrobustriskmodellingandscenarioanalysisenabledbyquantumalgorithms)andHSBC’strialsinsecurequantumcommunications.8

Whilethematurityofthesequantumtechnologiesvaries,theirstrategicpotentialisnotable.Earlyadoptionmayofferadvantages,allowingfinancialinstitutionstogainaccesstoscarcetalent,developcriticalinfrastructureandestablishpartnershipsaheadofbroaderindustryuptake.Byinitiatingthistransformationearly,industrypioneerscanmitigatefuturerisksandpositionthemselvesasleadersinanincreasinglyquantum-enabledlandscape.9Firstmoversmustalsoremainmindfuloftheinherentrisksassociatedwithearlyadoptionandshouldproceedwithappropriatecaution.

Quantumcomputingstandstoenhancecapabilitiesandreshapetheoperationsoffinancialinstitutions.

Quantumcomputingofferstheabilitytosolvehighlycomplexoptimization,simulationandriskanalysisproblemsatunprecedentedspeedandscale.Asthetechnologymatures,financialservicesfirmsmust

beproactiveinintegratingquantumsolutionstoensurerobustandstrategicoperationalpractices.Recentestimationssuggestthatquantumcomputingusecasesinthefinancialservicesindustrycouldgenerateupto$622billioninvalueby2035.10Someofthemostpromisingusecasescanbefoundinportfoliooptimization,tradingstrategies,optionspricing,riskmanagementandfrauddetection.

Thebankconductedastudyusingquantummachinelearning,specificallyvariationalquantumcircuit(VQC)-basedclassifiers.Byanalysingadatasetof500,000transactions,theR&Dteamreducedthedatacomplexitytomatchcurrentquantumhardwarecapabilities.UsingIBM’squantumtools,thequantummodeloutperformedtraditionalmethodsinidentifyingfraudandachievingbetteraccuracyandefficiencywithfewerdatafeatures.Thisapproachalsointroducedtransferlearning,enablingmodelstrainedononedatasettobeappliedtoothers,cultivatingcollaborationandinnovationacrossthefinancialsector.Duetoquantumhardwarelimitations,thestudyrunbyIntesaSanpaolousedaphasedapproachstartingwithquantum-inspired(classical

hardware)solutions,followedbytheintegrationofquantumtoolswithexistingsystemsandconcludingwithfulladoptionofquantum-basedworkflowswhenavailable.Compliancewasensuredthroughanonymizeddatasetsandprivacy-by-designprinciples,aligning

withregulatorystandardsandorganizationalsecuritypractices.

Thisinitiativehighlightsthepotentialofquantumcomputingtorevolutionizefrauddetection.Byimprovingaccuracyandenablingcollaborationthroughopen-sourceplatforms,bankscanstrengthenanti-fraudmeasuresandenhanceglobalfinancialsecurity.Asquantumtechnologyadvances,itsscalabilitywillunlockevengreaterbenefitsfortheindustry.16

SantanderBank’sproofofconcept(PoC)highlightedthecompetitiveperformanceofquantum-inspiredsolutions.Furtherresearch,however,isneededtoassessthecost-effectivenessofscalingthesetechnologiesforproductionenvironments.Testingotherquantum-inspiredsolutionscouldprovide

additionalinsightsintoscalabilityandefficiency.
