CambridgeAtCambridgeTennysonmetArthurHenryHallam,whobecamehisclosestfriend.Hisfirstpublicationwasacollectionof"hisboyishrhymesandthoseofhiselderbrotherCharles"entitledPoemsbyTwoBrotherspublishedin1827.EarlylifeandfirstpublicationIn1829hewasawardedtheChancellor‘sGoldMedalatCambridgeforoneofhisfirstpieces,“Timbuctoo“(延巴克圖).Reportedly,”itwasthoughttobenoslighthonourforayoungmanoftwentytowinthechancellor’sgoldmedal.”Hepublishedhisfirstsolocollectionofpoems,PoemsChieflyLyricalin1830.“Claribel”and“Mariana”（馬里亞納）,whichlatertooktheirplaceamongTennyson'smostcelebratedpoems,wereincludedinthisvolume.Althoughdecriedbysomecriticsasoverlysentimental,hisversesoonprovedpopularandbroughtTennysontotheattentionofwell-knownwritersoftheday,includingSamuelTaylorColeridge.ReturntoLincolnshireandsecondpublicationIn1833,Tennysonpublishedhissecondbookofpoetry,whichincludedhiswell-knownpoem,TheLadyofShalott.Thevolumemetheavycriticism,whichsodiscouragedTennysonthathedidnotpublishagainfor10moreyears,althoughhecontinuedtowrite.Thatsameyear,HallamdiedsuddenlyandunexpectedlyaftersufferingacerebralhaemorrhagewhileonvacationinVienna.Hallam'ssuddenandunexpecteddeathin1833hadaprofoundimpactonTennyson,andinspiredseveralmasterpieces,including"IntheValleyofCauteretz"andInMemoriamA.H.H.,alongpoemdetailingthe'WayoftheSoul'.vfe

ThirdpublicationIn1842,whilelivingmodestlyinLondon,TennysonpublishedtwovolumesofPoems,Theymetwithimmediatesuccess.Poemsfromthiscollection,suchasLocksleyHall,“Tithonus”,and“Ulysses“(尤利西斯)

havemetenduringfame.ThePrincess:AMedley,asatireofwomen'seducation,whichcameoutin1847,wasalsopopularforitslyrics.W.S.Gilbertlateradaptedandparodiedthepiecetwice:inThePrincess(1870)andinPrincessIda(1884).Itwasin1850thatTennysonreachedthepinnacleofhiscareer,finallypublishinghismasterpiece,InMemoriamA.H.H.,dedicatedtoHallam.LaterthesameyearhewasappointedPoetLaureateinsuccessiontoWilliamWordsworth.Inthesameyear(13June),TennysonmarriedEmilySellwood,whomhehadknownsincechildhood,inthevillageofShiplake.Theyhadtwosons,HallamTennyson(b.11August1852)—namedafterhisfriend—andLionel(b.16March1854).
