But unlike history it often has to deal with civilizations that have no written records. So it is the job of

6、 archaeologists to try to find out as much as they can about the life and the times of long dead people by looking at the places where they lived, what they wore, what tools they used and how they buried their dead. In this unit we will look at the life of early people(by examining the evidence from

7、 the Zhoukoudian caves) and life in Ancient Egypt. We will also see how archaeology is helping to restore the Terracotta Warriors of Xian. The study of archaeology is not just about the study of objects. These are very important of course. But what is equally important for understanding how people l

8、ived is: where the objects were found(on the floor of the house or with a body in the grave. whether they were found with other similar objects or alone what state they were in what they were made of So to get the most information about the site and the people who lived there, an excavation has to b

9、e organized in a systematic and formal way. So who come to work on an excavation have to be taught how to remove the earth from the ground carefully. They learn how important it is to do this in a way that does not harm or destroy any of the objects buried in the ground. Every part of the excavation

10、 must be recorded. This is because when the excavation is completed no one else will be able to do that excavation again. By excavating a site, archaeologists have destroyed the evidence.
