different.In1998,wehadnowayofknowingwherethisbravenewtechnologycalledthe
Internetwouldtakeus.Sincethen,ithasconnectedpeopleinunimaginableways,joininglost
siblings,savinglives,launchingrevolutions,butthedarknessandcyberbullyingthatIexperienced
hadmushroomed.Everydayonline,people,especiallyyoungpeoplewhoarenot
developmentallyequippedtohandlethis,aresoabusedandhumiliatedthattheycan'timagine
livingtothenextday,andsome,tragically,don't,andthere'snothingvirtualaboutthat.A
meta-analysisdoneoutoftheNetherlandsshowedthatforthefirsttime,cyberbullyingwas
leadingtosuicidalideationsmoresignificantlythanofflinebullying.Andyouknowwhatshocked
me,althoughitshouldn'thave,wasotherresearchlastyearthatdeterminedhumiliationwasa
moreintenselyfeltemotionthaneitherhappinessorevenanger.(5)
Crueltytoothersisnothingnew,butonline,technologicallyenhancedshamingisamplified,
uncontained,andpermanentlyaccessible.Theechoofembarrassmentusedtoextendonlyasfar
asyourfamily,village,schoolorcommunity,butnowit'stieonlinecommunitytoo.Millionsof
people,oftenanonymously,canstabyouwiththeirwords,andthat'salotofpain,andthereare
noperimetersaroundhowmanypeoplecanpubliclyobserveyouandputyouinapublic
stockade.Thereisaverypersonalpricetopublichumiliation,andthegrowthoftheInternethas
jackedupthatprice.(6)
Fornearlytwodecadesnow,wehaveslowlybeensowingtheseedsofshameandpublic
humiliationinourculturalsoil,bothon-andoffline.Gossipwebsites,paparazzi,reality
programming,politics,newsoutletsandsometimeshackersalltrafficinshame.It'sledto
desensitizationandapermissiveenvironmentonlinewhichlendsitselftotrolling,invasionof
privacy,andcyberbullying.ThisshifthascreatedwhatProfessorNicolausMillscallsacultureof
