Unit5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came?Section A (3a-3c)Teaching goals: 1. Learn the following new words: storm, light, area, wood, flashlight, match, beat, against, fallen, apart. 2. Learn the phrases: at first, fall asleep, die down, in a mess, fallen trees, broken windows. 3. Consolidate the use of the Past Continuous Tense in passage. 4. Let Ss finish the tasks with different reading strategies on the basis of the article. 5. Help Ss learn and know what the sense of social responsibility is.Key points: 1. Learn the new words and phrases. 2. Ss know and understand the Past Continuous Tense in article. 3. Ss use different reading strategies to complete different tasks.Difficult points: 1. Read and understand the article. 2. Use reading strategies correctly.Teaching procedures:Step 1 Lead-in1. Show a report about typhoon to Ss, let them know some important information about heavy rainstorm. Such as strong wind, black cloud, heavy rain, no light, ect.2. Teacher lead students to summarize the key information in the report.3. Show the pictures of Ben & Alabama to Ss, and try to let them know there was a heavy rainstorm hit Alabama.Step 2 Pre-reading1. Fast readingAsk students to read the article quickly, and find out what the main idea of the passage is. Let students pay more attention to the title and the picture in the article.2. Guessing gameShow some pictures about before, during and after the rainstorm, let students guess what objects people should prepare, what the weather is like and what the neighborhood looks like.3. Skimming1).Ask students to skim the article quickly, and match the main idea of each paragraph.2). Let students distinguish which paragraph tells us the situation before the rainstorm, and also during and after the storm.Step 3 While-reading1. read para 1-2 and fill in the blanks.(3a)1) What was the weather like before the heavy rain started?2) What was the neighborhood like after the rainstorm?2. Teacher lead students to summarize the article and show the mind-map.2). Ask students to fill in the blanks on the basis of the mind-map. 2. Show other disasters to students and let them know these disasters broke many things apart; we should do what we can do
