Chinaisoneoftheworld’slargestsourcemarketsofinternationalstudents,and

representsoneofthelargestgroupsofinternationalstudentsintheUK.Thisreportprovidesinsightsintothedecision-makingprocessofthesestudents,betweentheagesof13-16,astheyconsiderhighereducationandcareeroptions.

Itaimstohelpadviserstosupportstudentsmindfullyandeffectivelyatkeypointsin

theirjourney.Theresearchisbasedonabespokesurveyinvolving2,035youngpeoplefromChina,India,USA,TurkeyandFrance–withmorethan400Chineseparticipants–examiningtheirmotivations,informationrequirements,andsourcesofinfluence.

InacountrythesizeofChina,therearesignificantregionaldifferences–particularlywhencomparingeasterncitiesandprovincestotherestofthecountry.

Thekeyfindingsofthisresearchstudyindicate:

?TheprioritiesofstudentsinChinaalignedtotheirpassionsandinterestsmorethancareersandremuneration.Only23%areactivelyandstrategicallymappingouttheirfuture.

?TheUKisChina’spreferredstudylocation,with60%ofstudentssayingtheywouldconsiderit.ThenearestcompetitoristheUSA,with47%,andthenearestEuropeancompetitorisFrance,with37%.

?Comparedtootherinternationalstudents,thoseinChinaarelesslikelytoconsulttheirfamiliesandmorelikelytooptforsocialmedia–whichrequiresitsveryownstrategy,giventhatthecountryrunsmanyofitsown,nationally-exclusivesocialmediachannels.

?PrestigematterstostudentsinChina.Themostimportantfactorinpickingacountryisgaininganinternationallyrecognisedqualification(37%),andthemostimportantfactorinchoosingauniversityisitsrankingandreputation(46%.)

?WhilsttheUKticksbothoftheseboxesandisalreadythepreferreddestinationformoststudents,theystillhaveplentyofreservations–aboutculture,cost,communication,andcareers.Asanadviser,youmustbeawareofthemost

commonquestionstheyaskateachage.

TheUK’sinternationalstudentenrolmentlandscapehaschangedsignificantlyoverthelastdecade,with

moreoverseaslearnersattractedbytheprestige,qualityofeducation,andcareeropportunitiesthatBritishdegreescanoffer.Chinahasalwaysbeenanimportantpartofthispicture.Itsstudentsrevereoureducationsystem,ourjobmarket,and–perhapsmostofall–theoverallexperienceoflivingandlearninginBritain.

Thepastfewyearshaveshownthatnothingisguaranteedininternationalstudentmobility,butitisclearthatUKuniversitiescontinuetobeattractivetostudentsinChina,whoovercomeculturalandlinguisticbarrierstoembracenewopportunities.Priorchallenges,however,arenowsharpenedbythefactthat

studentsarestartingtheirresearchanddecision-makingprocessatamuchyoungerage.Thisreport

aimstohelpyoukeepyourfingeronthepulseofwhatthenextgenerationofstudentsinChinawantandneedtoknowaboutstudyingintheUK–andtounderstandthereasonswhy.

Whilstmanyreportsinvestigatesentimentofcurrentapplicantstohighereducation,wehopethisoneisusefultoyou,inthecrucialworkyoudoinprovidingexpertinformation,advice,andguidanceonaworldfullofopportunities.UCASisproudofitscommunityofadvisersandcounsellors,andasyoureadthroughthisreport,pleasedoreachouttouswithyourthoughtsandideasastohowwecanplayourpartin

self-beliefandtheytrustintheir

instincts.Theyknowwhattheywant,andtheypursueitwithexcitement.

DecisionsaredrivenbypassionsandinterestsandthatincludesapassionforUKuniversities.

StudentsinChinaarethemostoptimisticofallthenationalitieswesurveyed,withover95%feelingpositiveaboutboththepresentandthefuture.

Thisbrightoutlooktranslatesdirectlyintotheirapproachtomakedecisions–whenweaskedthemwhethertheyweremappingouttheir

future,only23%saidyes.

Self-belief,followingtheirinstincts,andstickingtowhattheyenjoyarekeyphilosophiesforthisdemographic–whoseapproachisfocusedonfulfilmentoverfinances.

Thiscertainlydoesn’tmeanthatthere’snostrategytotheirdecision-making,butratherthatthere’sanelementoffaithinvolved.

Thisisagroupwhichbelievesinthepoweroftheirpassions.

Andremember,manyparentsofthisagegrouparenowMillennials–whichmeansyoungpeoplearegettingverydifferentadvicetowhathas

Butthereareseveralconcernsthat

mayholdtherestoftherespondentsback,includingpracticalchallengeslikelanguagebarriers,alackofknowledgeofwhattheexperiencewouldbelike

andtheconcernofthefinancialcostofstudyingabroad–andotherconcernsaroundtheiracademicreadiness,

emotionalstress,andlackofsupport.Theseconcernsaremoreprominentintheyoungestrespondents.

Someofthesecanbeanswered

andresolved,butsomeofthemareinherentandintrinsicchallengesofstudyingabroad.Ratherthantryingtodownplaythem,focusinstead

onhighlightingthekeyadvantages–likegainingaglobalperspective,accessingahigh-qualityeducation,anddevelopingindependence.

Naturally–becauseofthedistancesinvolved–socialmediaisan

importantresearchtoolforstudentsinChinalookingtostudyabroad.Italsoexposesthemtonaturallyoccurring

contentfromexistingstudents–

whichweknowisapowerfulinfluence.Real-lifeexamplesofpeoplewho

havepursuedsimilarjourneyscanbereassuringandinspiring,bringingtheprocesstolifeandmakingaspirationsfeeltangible.
