collidedinbadweatherconditions.Therewere20reportsofpersonal
injury.Theseinjuriesusuallyoccurredbecauseseamendidnottakecare
withmachineryorbecausetheydidnotwearthecorrecttypeofprotective
clothing.Sevenshipsreportedfiresonboardduringtheyear:in2
incidents,thefiresstartedinthegalley,inanother2incidents,fires
startedwhenchemicalcontainersexploded;andin3incidents,thefires
occurredbecauseofelectricalfaults.On4occasionsvesselslostpower
becausethecrewdidnotfollowcorrectproceduresduringmaneuvering.
Therewereaccountsofcargocontamination:1cargoofgrainsufferedfrom
heatdamage,andintheothercase,waterleakedintotheholdanddamaged
acargooffruit.

ThisincidenttookplaceonboardtheMVElgainJanuaryofthisyear.
Someofourcargoofpipesbrokelooseonthedeckwhenwewererounding
theCapeofGoodHopeinbadweather.Therewerehighwindsandvisibility
wasverypoor.AtthetimeoftheincidentIwasonwatchonthebridge.
The2ndofficerheardaloudbangingnoiseandnoticedthepipeswereloose.
IimmediatelyinformedtheCaptainwhoorderedateamtogoondeckto
tieandsecurethepipes.Theproblemwascausedbytheseveremovement
ofthevesselandsomelashingsbreaking.Thedeckcrewswereabletolever
thepipesintoasecureposition.Wemanagedtolashthecargodownagain
sufficientlyuntilthebadweatherpassed.Therewasverylittlewecould
dotoensurethatthisincidentdoesnothappenagain.However,whenbad
weatherisforecast,alllashingsshouldbecheckedand,ifnecessary,
extralashingsshouldbeputinplace.

Itisacommonbeliefamongmembersofthepublicthatpiracybelongsto
anerainwhichswashbucklingpiratesplayedcatandmousewithsailing
shipladenwithgold.Thatpiracyisathingofthepast,however,isa
myth.ThemainpointI'dliketomakeisthatarmedrobberyisstilla
realthreattotheshippingindustry.Theinternationalmaritimebureau
reportedthatin1994therewere92seriousattacksonships.Twoyears
laterin1996,thisfigurerocketedto174,andin1997thefigure
continuedtorisedramaticallyto252.Almosttocombatthiscrimewere
madeduringtheearly1990sandconsequentlythenumberofattacks
decreasedsignificantly.Thisdecreasewasduetotwomainfactors.IMO
missionsweresenttoproblemareasandpressurewasalsoexertedon
countrieswhosewaterswereknownblackspotsforpirateattacks.

Twotypesofcompassesareusedatsea,namelythegyrocompassandthe
magneticcompass.Thegyrocompassiselectricallydrivenandindicates
thedirectionofthegeographicalortruenorthpoleoftheearth.When
agyrocompasshasbeenstarted,sometimemustbeallowedforittosettle
down,andaship'sgyrocompassshouldbestartedsomehoursbeforeit
istobeused.Agyrocompassmayfunctioncorrectly,butatthesametime
registerasmall,constanterrorknownasgyroerror.Ifthegyrocompass
indicatesadirectionwhichisnumericallylargerthanthetruedirection,
theerrorisdescribedashigh,andconverselyanumericallysmaller

isonhalfastern,thewarpingdrumpicksuptheslack.Topreventthe
linefrombeingfouled,thehawserorspringisledthroughthefairlead.
Theshipisthenmaneuveredalongtheembankmentandfastenedtobollards

whichmeansthatthelinecanbepulledaboard.Thesequenceofcasting
offordersthatcanthenbegivendependsonhowthevesselhasbeen
berthed,andontheprevailingweatherconditionandcurrents.

Oneofthemostimportantresponsibilitiesofthefirstmateistomake
surethatcargowillbeproperlyloadedandstowed.Whetherbulkcargo,
generalcargo,heavycargo,containerizedcargoesorrefrigerated

acargowillnotinanywayaffectthevessel'sstabilityandjeopardize
