Indeed science is so good at what it does that theres always a temptation(誘惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social

2、Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more a mbitious and serious than his earlier books. It is a

3、n attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sourc es of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others arent?To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of disciplines.C

4、onsidering this, you might expect the book to be a dry recitation of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unort hodox(非常規(guī) 的),and perhaps unfortunate, way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the r

5、eaders attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters.On the whole,

6、 Brookss story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong or memorable c

7、haracters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brookss attempt to translate his tale into science.1. The report lists ten books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as Im not one to lie too often (Id hate to be caught out), Ill admit he re and now that I havent read the entire top ten. But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of p eople,

13、I have read the book at number one, George Orwells 1984.1 think its really brilliant.The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it. It says that man y people lie about having read Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I havent read hi m, but havent lied about

14、 it either) and Herman Melville.Asked why they lied, the most common reason was to impress someone they were speaking to. This could be tricky if the conversation became more in-depth!But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K. Rowling, John Grisham, Sophie Kinsella (ah, the

15、 big sellers, in other words). Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story (Ill come clean: I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so). l.How did the author find his friend a book liar?By judg

21、is best, the people who want to improve their lives are left confused by all of the conflicting information .The end result is that we feel like we cant focus or that were focused on the wrong things , and so we take less action , make less progress , and stay the same when we could be improving .It
