1Scope

Thisstandarddefinestherequirementsforcolordeviations,aswellasthemeasurementandeval‐uationconditionsfortheequipment-baseddeterminationofcolordifferences,forvehicleinterior

equipmentcomponents.Itappliestothesamplemonitoringandmonitoringofconformityofpro‐ductionforthefollowingmaterials:

–Solid-coloredandnon-luminescenttextiles

–Insensitivetostroking,withoutstructure

–Insensitivetostroking,withstructure

–Sensitivetostroking,withoutstructure

–Plasticparts

–Withgrainedsurfaces(leathergrain,finestructure,etc.)

–Withpaintedsurfaces(soft-touchpaint,decorativepaint,etc.)

–Slushpart,foamfilm,PUhardfoam(dashboardarea,sunvisor)

2Definitions

2.1Designreleasesample

ColorconceptreleasedbyDesign.Thedesignreleasesampleisacolorimetricreferenceandpro‐videsthebasisfortheoriginalstandardandforthesamplestandards.

2.2Samplestandard

2.2.1SamplestandardfortheVolkswagenbrand

Reproductionofthedesignreleasesamplewithregardtocolor,gloss,feel,texture,andgrainintheformofsamplesheets,finishedpartsections,orentirefinishedparts.

Samplestandardsareusedforvisualsampleinspectionpurposes.

2.2.2SamplestandardfortheAudibrand

Thepaintedsamplestandardservesasreferenceforthevisualandcolorimetricevaluationofallsurfaces.ThispaintedsamplestandardforcolorconsistsofapaintedISOA5plasticpanel.It

servesasvisualandcolorimetricreference.However,thevisualimpressiontakesprecedence.

Samplestandardsformaterials,e.g.,leather,areusedonlyasareferenceforstructureandtactileproperties.

2.3Originalcolortone

Computedmeanvalueoftheabsolutecolorcoordinatesofall(maximum300)samplestandards.

2.4Originalstandard

Theoriginalstandardisthesamplestandardthatisclosesttothecomputedoriginalcolortone.Itservesastheexclusivecolorimetricreference.

2.7Insensitivetostroking

Textilesareinsensitivetostrokingiftheydonothaveanyvisuallyperceptiblecontrastdifferenceswhenstrokedbyhand.

2.8Sensitivetostroking

Textilesaresensitivetostrokingiftheyhavevisuallyperceptiblecontrastdifferenceswhenstrokedbyhand(e.g.,velour,tufting,Alcantara?).

2.9Structures

Structuresareembossmentsandconsistentseamcontoursthatcreatedifferentpileheightsinpla‐ces,thusproducingvisuallydiscerniblecontrastdifferences.

2.10Glosslevel

Glosslevel,alsoreferredtoassurfacegloss,describesthereflectionpropertiesofsurfacesandmaterials.Theglosslevelisindicatedinglossunits(GU).

ColorconsistencyasperVolkswagenstandardVW50190

4Requirements

4.1Basicrequirements

Asanitycheckofthelimitsdeterminedbymeasurementforvisualacceptance,whichisdefinedbyVolkswagenAGduringadvanceengineering,isusedasthebasisforthemeasurementtolerances.Duetofactorsinfluencingtheequipmentandtechniques,revisionsmaybemadeintheproductionphase.

Thesupplierisrequiredtomonitortheprocessusingstatisticalprocesscontrol.

Componentsmustbemeasuredbythesupplierwithoutexception,anddeliveredwiththecorre‐spondingreport.Inaddition,themeasuredvaluesmustbesanity-checkedintermsofthevisualimpression(evenwhenthemeasurement-basedevaluationyieldsanOKresult).

Withoutexception,allmeasurement-basedandvisualevaluationsareconductedunderboththe

D65(daylight)andF11(artificiallight)standardilluminants.Theresultingvaluesmustberecordedinthetestreportsandmeasurementreportsaccordingly.

Inanycase,thecolorimetricevaluationsarecarriedoutinconsiderationofthecorrespondingglosslevels.Theselevelsmustalsobeenteredinthetestreportsandmeasurementreports.

Forcolorimetricevaluationsofunpaintedplasticparts,thesemi-crystallinesamplestandardisal‐waysusedasareference,regardlessofthematerial.

Forcolorimetricevaluationsofleather,theleatherettevariantisalwaysusedasareference.

Therangeoffluctuationinthecolorvaluesfrom10individualmeasurementsmustnotexceed±0.15CIELABunits(exception:ΔL*).

Theevaluationissubjecttovisualacceptanceintheas-installedposition.

Thestandardtolerancevaluesspecifiedinthisstandardserveasatargetvalueatthestartofthesample-inspectionphase.Differentvaluesarepossibledependingonthematerialandthecolor

variant.Iftherearedeviatingtolerancevalues,theywillbenotedintheappropriateTechnicalSup‐plySpecification(TL),drawing,orsamplestandard,orcommunicatedtothetestingparties.Ifno

deviatingtolerancevalueshavebeenagreedupon,thespecificationsinthisstandardapply.

Ifacolorstandarddoesnotfeaturetherelevantgrain,theuseofthealternativegrainsfrom

table1

isrecommendedforthecolorimetricevaluation.

Thefollowingfactorscanbeapplied:

–Mold-integratedtransitionsinadirectlyvisiblearea=basetolerance×1.

–Non-mold-integratedtransitionsaswellascomponentsinanareathatisnotdirectlyvisi‐ble=basetolerance×1.5.

–Forcomponentsthatareproducedfromanamorphousmaterial,thebasetolerancefor

parameterΔL*canbemultipliedbythefactor2.5,ifcomparisonwasmadeagainstthesemi-

crystallinecolorspecification.Thismethodcanalsobeusedwhencomparingleatherand

leatherette,providedthattheleathersamplehasbeencomparedagainsttheleatherettespeci‐fication.

–Forpaintedcomponentswithaglosslevel>20.0GU,thebasetoleranceforparameterΔL*canbemultipliedbythefactor2.5.

Componentgroupsandfinishedpartsamplesmustalwayshaveavisuallyharmoniousoverallim‐pression.

Inaddition,thefollowingappliestothefinishedpartsamplesoftheVolkswagenbrand:

Themaximumdeviationbetweensurfacesmadeofthesamematerialmustnotexceedthebasictolerance.Thisdoesnotapplytoareasnotdirectlyadjoiningeachother.Inthiscase,itmustbeensuredthatamaximumdeviationof|ΔL*|1.2amongallthematerialsisnotexceeded.Theindi‐vidualmaterialsmustbevisuallyacceptableaccordingtothesamplestandard.

InASSYscomprisingcomponentsmadeofamorphousand/orsemi-crystallinematerials,the

measurementdeviationsamongtheindividualcomponentsmustnotexceedthebasictolerance.

4.4Referencespecification

Unlessotherwiseagreedupon,thedesignreleasesamplewillserveasthereferencefortheVolks‐wagenbrand.Deviatingfromthisrule,theoriginalstandardmayalsobeused.Thereferencespec‐ificationisdocumentedonthesamplestandards.TherequiredreferencespecificationsarestoredintheVolkswagenMaterialsEngineeringPolymersdepartment(GQL-P).

4.4.1Finishedpartsample

Inthecaseofdesign-relatedcoloreffects,finishedpartsamplestandardsmustbecreatedinagreementwithVolkswagenDesign.Forcolorconsistencyrequirements,see

section4.3

5Testing

5.1Testequipment

–Thecolorimetricmeasurementsaretakenwithaspectrophotometer(

DINENISO11664-3

).

–Forpaintedandgrainedplasticsurfacesandpaintedmetalparts,45°/0andtheinverseisthesuitablegeometry.

–Forhigh-glosssurfaces,withtheexceptionofeffectcolorsandpaintcoatings,thed/8°geome‐trycanbeused.

–Fortestingtextilesurfaces,boththe45°/0andthed/8°geometriesandtheirinversesaresuit‐able.Ifthed/8°geometriesandtheinversesareapplied,theobtainedvaluesmustbecom‐

paredwiththosemeasuredwiththe45°/0devicewhichispreferredbythelaboratory.

–Since,forAudiAGparts,thepaintedsamplestandardisusedasacolorreferenceregardlessofthereflectionbehaviorofdifferentsurfaces,measurementsforAudiaregenerallycarried

outusingthed/8°geometry,excludinggloss(SCE).

–Thespectralresolutionofthecolorimetermustbenolessthan5nmandnogreaterthan

10nm.

5.1.1Calibrationandtestequipmentmonitoring

Priortostartingthemeasurement,themeasuringdevicemustbecalibratedasspecifiedbythemanufacturerofthedevice.

Itmustbeensuredthatthedevicehassufficientbatteryvoltagesinceinsufficientbatteryvoltagecancauseerroneousreadings.

Thetestequipmentmustbeinspectedatregularintervals.Tocheckthedeviceconsistency,the

ΔL*-,Δa*-,andΔb*valuesofthecurrentlymeasuredtestsheetmustbecomparedtotheoriginallymeasureddatasetforconstancy.Thedatamustbeloggedaccordingly.Achromaticteststandardwithhighcolorconsistencymaybeusedasatestsheet(ideallyachromatic,greencolor).

Tocheckthesamplestandard,aregularcomparisonmeasurementwithrespecttotheL*,a*,b*valuesstoredinthedevice,whichweredeterminedafterreceivingthesamplestandard,mustbetaken.Thedatamustbeloggedaccordingly.

Ifdeviatingvaluesaredetermined,appropriatemeasuresmustbetaken(equipmentinspectionorcreationofanewsamplestandard).

5.2Specimenpreparation

Thespecimensmustbevisuallycheckedforinhomogeneitiesofthegrainandtheglosslevel.Thesurfacemustbefreeofsoiling.Areasshowingdamagenotintentionallycausedfortestingpurpo‐ses(e.g.,scratchtest,stresswhitening)mustbeexcludedfromthemeasurement.Plasticparts

andpaintedpartsrequirenospecificpreparationforthetest.

Textilesthataresensitivetostrokingmustbebrushedbeforethestartofthemeasurement,first1xagainstthepiledirection(specimenappearsdarker),then10xinthepiledirection(specimenap‐

pearslighterandstructureappearsmorehomogeneous).Aclothingbrushwithpolyesterbristlesofapproximately18mmlengthand0.3mmthicknessmustbeused.

Withneedle-punchednon-wovenmaterial,itissufficienttostrokethematerialbyhand,ensuring

thatthehandiscleanandfreeofgrease,first1xagainstthepiledirection(specimenappearsdark‐er),then10xinthepiledirection(specimenappearslighterandstructureappearsmorehomoge‐

neous).

Textilesthatarenotsensitivetostrokingrequirenopreparation.

Withmulti-colorfibersystems,possiblespottinessmustberuledout.

5.3

5.3.1

Measurementprocedure

Generalrequirements

Themeasurementopeningmustbematchedtothespecificspecimenshape.Inthecaseoftextilespecimens,aslargeameasuringopeningaspossiblemustbeselected.

Flat-planesurfaceswithnopressuremarksmustbeselectedforthemeasurementareas.

Whenselectingthemeasuringpoints,itmustbeensuredthattheyaredistributedovertheentirespecimensurfaceandareatleast3cmfromtheedgewherepossible.

Fortranslucenttextiles,abackingmustbeselectedthatcorrespondstotheundercutofthefinish‐edpartorsamplestandardsmustbecreatedfromthefinishedpart.Forthesematerials,thesam‐plestandardsdonotapplytoproductsofpre-manufacturingprocesses.

5.3.2Measuringthesamplestandard

Forthereleaseofasamplestandard,onlyameasuringdevicewithaninstrumentagreement<0.20ΔE*CIELABwithrespecttotheVolkswagenmasterdevicemustbeused.

Thesamplestandardsofthefollowingmaterialsmustbesubjectedtoatleastfiveindividualmeas‐urementsdistributedovertheentireareaofthedefinedsurface(see

figure1

and

figure2

):Plasticpanels,paintedplasticpanels,coatedpanels,films,leather,andleatherette.Forthepaintedsam‐plestandardsofAudiAG,thegrainedareamustbescanned.Ifthesmoothsurfaceisusedasref‐erence,thismustbeexplicitlystatedonthetolerancelabelonthebackoftheplasticpanel(see

figureA.2

).

Fortextilesamplestandardswith45°/0geometry,tenindividualmeasurementsmustbetaken(see

figure3

)andthemeanvaluemustbedetermined.Whenusingadevicewithasphericalshape,thespecimenmustbeturned90°3timeseachtodetermineonemeasuredvalue(see

figure4

).Inthiscase,themeanvalueisdeterminedfromfivemeasuredvalues.

5.3.3Measurementonthecomponent/onspecimens

Forplasticspecimens(paintedorunpainted),preferablyfive(butatleastthree)individualmeas‐urementsmustbetaken,distributedovertheentirespecimensurface.

Fortextilespecimens,tenindividualmeasurementsmustbetakenwith45°/0geometryandthe

meanvaluedetermined.Whenusingadevicewithasphericalshape,thespecimenmustbe

turned90°3timeseachtodetermineonemeasuredvalue.Inthiscase,themeanvalueisdeter‐minedfromfivemeasuredvalues.Themeasuringpointsmustbeagreeduponinadvanceamongthetestingparties.

6Requirementsforstylingreleasesamples,originalstandards,andsamplestandardsfortheVolkswagenbrand

Theoriginalstandardsandsamplestandardsmustcorrespondtothestylingreleasesample.

Thesamplestandardsmustbestoredwithinaprotectivesleeveinadark,dry,coolplaceinordertoavoidvisualchanges.Thevisuallyrelevantsideiscoveredwithasheetofrough,neutralgraysheetofrecyclingpaperinsidetheprotectivesleeve.

TheshapeofthecoverandthelabelingoftheVolkswagensamplestandardmustcorrespondtotheVolkswagenCorporateDesignspecifications,sothattheyareclearlytobeidentifiedasVolks‐wagensamplestandards.
